Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain, has been seen countless times from the Earth below. But how often do we see it from the edge of space? A recent image shared by NASA astronaut Don Pettit has given the world a rare view of this Himalayan wonder from orbit.

How was the image captured?
The picture was snapped from the International Space Station (ISS), where Pettit is deployed. He posted the image on his X account, previously Twitter, of the snow-covered top of Mount Everest amidst Nepal's hilly landscape. The image shows the majesty of the mountain in a manner accessible only to astronauts observing it from aloft.

What did the astronaut say about the view?
Posting the image, Pettit wrote, “Orbiting the Himalayas mountain range. Mount Everest is in this photo, with much of Nepal visible as well.” His caption reflected both awe and admiration for the planet’s natural beauty.

How did people react online?
Within two days, the image gathered over three lakh views and hundreds of comments.  Several users commented with amazement at the view. One noted, "This photo makes you realise going to space is way cooler than climbing Mount Everest." Another quipped, "Can you see all the trash up there that the human train has left?"

Others expressed emotional responses, describing the photo as "breathtaking" and "beautiful". Others were inspired to make future visits to Nepal and Tibet, whereas others simply appreciated the reminder of how stunning Earth appears from outer space.

Why has the photo received so much attention?
Space photos of Mount Everest are scarce and fascinating, infusing the thrill of space travel with the mystique of the Himalayas. Pettit's post thrilled space fans in addition to rekindling appreciation for the delicate beauty of our planet from a bird's-eye view.
