Situated along the scenic banks of the Tamsa River, Azamgarh holds significant historical importance in the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh. Surrounded by the districts of Mau, Gorakhpur, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Sultanpur, and Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh serves as one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. This parliamentary seat encompasses five Assembly constituencies: Gopalpur, Sagri, Mubarakpur, Azamgarh, and Mehnagar.

In this constituency, the Yadav-OBC (21%), Muslim (17%), and Dalit (19%) communities constitute the majority of voters. The remaining voters hail from diverse backgrounds, including the Bhumihar, Thakur, Brahmin, and Kayasth communities. Azamgarh, deemed one of the most underdeveloped districts in Uttar Pradesh, faces significant socio-economic challenges.

In the 2019 elections, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav emerged victorious in the Azamgarh seat, securing 6,21,578 votes. His closest rival, BJP candidate Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua, garnered 3,61,704 votes, while BSP leader Abhimanyu Singh Saini received 10,078 votes. The voter turnout for this election stood at 56%.

However, following Akhilesh Yadav's decision to contest the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Azamgarh seat became vacant. In the subsequent by-election, BJP candidate Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua emerged victorious once again, securing 3,12,768 votes. SP candidate Dharmendra Yadav secured the second position with 3,04,089 votes, followed by BSP leader Shah Alam with 2,66,210 votes.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Mulayam Singh Yadav emerged victorious in the Azamgarh seat, defeating BJP's Ramakant Yadav. Mulayam secured 3,40,306 votes, accounting for 35.4% of the total votes cast, while Ramakant received 2,77,102 votes, constituting 28.9% of the votes. BSP's Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali secured the third position with 2,66,528 votes, making up 27.8% of the total votes. Congress candidate Arvind Kumar Jayaswal received 17,950 votes, representing 1.9% of the votes cast.
