However, the Samajwadi Party's Rewati Raman Singh claimed victory in 2004 and 2009. In 2014, the BJP regained the seat as Shyama Charan Gupta defeated Rewati Raman Singh. Notably, Gupta later switched allegiance, leaving the BJP to join the Samajwadi Party.

Allahabad stands as a prominent Lok Sabha constituency within Uttar Pradesh, known for hosting notable political figures like Lal Bahadur Shastri, VP Singh, Murli Manohar Joshi, Janeshwar Mishra, and even actor Amitabh Bachchan. This enduring legacy keeps the spotlight firmly fixed on this seat. As per the 2011 census, the population of the Allahabad district totals 5,954,390. With a sex ratio of 901 females per 1,000 males and a literacy rate of 72.3%, the district exhibits significant demographic and educational characteristics. The Allahabad parliamentary constituency encompasses five Assembly seats: Meja, Karchana, Allahabad South, Bara, and Koraon, with Bara and Koraon designated as reserved seats for Scheduled Castes.

The BJP secured victory in this constituency for the first time in 1996, with Murli Manohar Joshi emerging as the triumphant candidate in three successive elections until 1999. However, the Samajwadi Party's Rewati Raman Singh claimed victory in 2004 and 2009. In 2014, the BJP regained the seat as Shyama Charan Gupta defeated Rewati Raman Singh. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rita Bahuguna Joshi of the BJP emerged victorious in Allahabad, securing a win over the SP's candidate Rajendra Singh Patel. Joshi garnered 494,454 votes, surpassing Patel who received 310,179 votes. The Congress candidate, Yogesh Shukla, trailed behind with just 31,953 votes.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Shyama Charan Gupta of the BJP secured victory in Allahabad by defeating SP's Rewati Raman Singh with a margin of 62,009 votes. Gupta garnered 313,772 votes, while Singh received 251,763 votes. Kesari Devi Patel of the BSP secured 162,073 votes, and Nandgopal Nandi of the Congress received 102,453 votes.
