The second phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 in Uttar Pradesh is set to take place on April 26. Eight Lok Sabha constituencies will go to polls in the second phase including Amroha, Aligarh, Baghpat, Bulandshahar, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Meerut and Mathura.
With 80 Lok Sabha seats, Uttar Pradesh is a crucial battleground for political parties given the power it holds to transform the results of the general election. The state is voting in all the seven phases of elections till June 1.
In the 2019 general election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 62 seats and its ally Apna Dal got two seats. The Congress party had managed to get only one seat, with Sonia Gandhi retaining Raebareli.
Key constituencies and candidates in phase 2
In the second phase of the Lok Sabha election, voters across Amroha, Aligarh, Baghpat, Bulandshahar, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Meerut and Mathura will vote on April 26.
Amroha constituency, one of the most anticipated seats, will see a contest between INDIA bloc's candidate and sitting MP Kunwar Danish Ali, BJP's candidate Kanwar Singh Tanwar and Mujahid Hussain from BSP. In Aligarh, BJP's Satish Gautam, SP's Brijendra Singh and BSP's Hitendra Kumar are the key contenders.
Among the contenders vying for the Baghpat Lok Sabha seat -- a key political region in Uttar Pradesh -- are Rajkumar Sangwan from RLD, Amarpal Sharma from SP and Praveen Bansal from BSP. RLD, this time, is contesting in alliance with BJP.

In the 2024 candidates list for Bulandshahr constituency, BJP has fielded Bhola Singh while Congress has named Shivram Valmiki and BSP Girish Jatav. Key candidates contesting from the Ghaziabad seat are Atul Garg from BJP, Dolly Sharma from Congress and Nandkishor Pundhir from BSP. Historically dominated by the saffron party, the Ghaziabad constituency has been a stronghold for prominent leaders like Rajnath Singh and Gen VK Singh.

In Meerut, the notable contenders are Devvrat Tyagi representing the BSP, Arun Govil of the BJP, and Sunita Verma from SP.
Meanwhile, Mathura will see a triangular contest between the BJP, Congress and the BSP. The BJP has fielded sitting MP Hema Malini from the seat and her main contest is with Mukesh Dhangar of Congress. The BSP has given the ticket to Suresh Singh.

In the Gautam Buddha Nagar Lok Sabha constituency, the BJP has once again nominated Mahesh Sharma, the incumbent Member of Parliament, who secured victories in both the 2014 and 2019 elections with significant margins, solidifying his position. SP has nominated Mahendra Singh Nagar and BSP has announced Rajendra Singh Solanki as its candidate.
