Meerut Lok Sabha elections 2024: Voting date, results, candidates, main parties, and schedule

UP Lok Sabha Elections: As Meerut gears up for the upcoming election, pressing concerns such as unemployment, devaluation, and price hikes loom large on the minds of its citizens.

The Meerut Lok Sabha Constituency, situated in Uttar Pradesh, covers parts of Meerut and Hapur districts and is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. Meerut goes to polls in the second phase of the General Elections, on April 26, while counting will take place along with the rest of the country, on June 4.

Although Meerut has a substantial Muslim voter base of around 34%, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been victorious here five times since 1996. In the 2019 elections, BJP candidate Rajendra Agarwal narrowly secured the Meerut seat by defeating the Samajwadi Party (SP)-backed Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) candidate Haji Yakub Qureshi by a slim margin of fewer than 5,000 votes.

In 2014, Agarwal had beaten BSP candidate Mohammad Shahid Akhlak.
This year, however, the party has replaced three-time Member of Parliament Rajendra Agarwal with Arun Govil, known for portraying Lord Ram in the 80s TV serial 'Ramayan'. Govil grew up in Meerut and studied there until graduation.
SP changed its candidate choice twice before the last date for filing nominations, and finally went with former Mayor Sunita Verma.

Earlier, SP had named sitting Member of Legislative Assembly from Sardhana, Atul Pradhan, as its candidate for Meerut. Pradhan had earlier replaced Supreme Court advocate Bhanu Pratap Singh as the SP candidate, who was replaced after protests by local SP workers that Singh was an “outsider”.

BSP’s Devvrat Tyagi is also in fray. He has expressed confidence in his victory, emphasizing the significance of the Dalit-Muslim equation while criticizing BJP candidate Arun Govil as a "gimmick Ram".
Unemployment, devaluation and price hike are some of the issues on the voter's agenda in Meerut this upcoming Lok Sabha election. The electorate's concerns transcend mere political discourse, emphasising the urgency for tangible solutions to long-standing grievances and immediate challenges.
