Incumbent MP Manoj Tiwari is re-nominated for the North East Delhi seat.

In a significant political shuffle, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its list of five candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, marking the exclusion of four incumbent MPs—Meenakshi Lekhi, Harsh Vardhan, Parvesh Verma, and Ramesh Bidhuri.

Among the five candidates declared by the BJP, Tiwari, a famous Bhojpuri actor-singer, is the only incumbent MP.

The strategic move introduces Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, as the contender for the New Delhi seat, while incumbent MP Manoj Tiwari retains his position in Northeast Delhi.

Key Points:

Bansuri Swaraj's debut

  • Bansuri Swaraj, a Supreme Court lawyer and Delhi BJP secretary, is poised to enter the political arena with her nomination for the New Delhi seat, following in the footsteps of her late mother, Sushma Swaraj.
  • The strategic move positions Swaraj as a fresh face for the BJP, signaling a shift in the party's electoral strategy.

Manoj Tiwari retains seat
  • Two-time incumbent MP Manoj Tiwari, a renowned Bhojpuri actor-singer, secures re-nomination for the Northeast Delhi seat, maintaining the party's trust in his leadership.

South Delhi witnesses leadership change
  • Former South Delhi mayor and BJP general secretary Kamaljeet Sehrawat steps into the electoral fray, contesting from the West Delhi constituency.
  • Kamaljeet Sehrawat replaces two-time MP Parvesh Verma, signaling a strategic move by the party, particularly within the Jat community.

Surprising exclusion
  • In an unexpected move, the party drops two-time South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri, offering the ticket to Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly.

Chandni Chowk
  • Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), becomes the BJP candidate for Chandni Chowk, replacing two-time MP Harsh Vardhan.

Future nominations
  • BJP yet to announce candidates for East Delhi and North West Delhi

The BJP on March 2 released the first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The first list of candidates includes 34 central ministers and MoS and Lok Sabha Speaker. The list comprises 28 women and 47 young leaders spreading across 16 states and Union Territories.
