OPINION

J&K assembly election is turning out to be a battle of proxies

Kashmir Valley is enthusiastic about the election. The political landscape has changed hugely since 2019, with the advent of many independent candidates, including former separatists. It’s catalysed speculation on whether many aspirants are fronts

J&K Assembly elections: tough challenge for BJP

If the BJP, with NDA partners like the Apni Party and People’s Conference, can form the government in J&K, that will be seen as a mandate in favour of the revocation of Article 370

Haryana’s election heads for a bipolar face-off

Congress and BJP strategies revolve around political mobilisation anchored by Jats and OBCs respectively. Also, high profile crime, unemployment and inflation will have a bearing

Voting for the ongoing assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana will conclude on October 5. The three-phase elections in J&K will conclude on October 1 while Haryana will vote in a single phase on October 5. All eyes will be on the exit poll predictions on October 5 after the voting concludes in Haryana. Several pollsters will release their exit poll predictions for both the states on the evening of October 5. The predictions will give an early indication of which party may form the government in both Haryana and J&K on October 8.

Exit polls are surveys conducted immediately after voters leave polling stations. The aim is to predict the outcome of an election before the official results are announced. Exit polls can offer a quick snapshot of public sentiment and help gauge how different demographics voted, such as age, gender, and socio-economic status. However, despite offering valuable insights into voter behavior, the accuracy of exit polls can vary, influenced by factors like sample size and selection. Take Lok Sabha elections for instance. Most exit polls predicted that BJP would comfortably cross the majority mark in the lower house in the recently concluded general election. However, the party fell short of the majority by a fair margin, proving almost every pollster wrong. Usually, exit polls predictions are close to the actual results.

Haryana exit polls in 2019

In the previous assembly elections, a poll of six exit polls predicted that BJP would comfortably form the government in Haryana. The exit polls predicted around 67 seats for BJP in the 90-member assembly and just 13 for Congress. However, the predictions were off the mark since BJP won 40 seats and could not reach a majority figure on its own.

Jammu & Kashmir exit polls in 2014

However, in J&K, the exit polls in 2014 had correctly predicted a hung assembly. The CVoter exit poll said that BJP would get 27-33 seats, PDP would get 32-38, and National Conference (NC) 8-14. After the results were declared, PDP emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats while BJP won 25 seats.
