Maharashtra Election Results updates: PM Modi says 'ek hain toh safe hain' after massive victory

It was a mixed bag for 11 seats with more than 35 per cent Muslim voters, where six candidates of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) emerged victorious in the Maharashtra Assembly polls on Saturday, while four seats went to the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

The Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehad Muslimeen (AIMIM), which is not aligned with either of the coalitions, won its lone seat -- Malegaon Central -- as Mufti Mohammed Khalique polled 1,09,653 votes to emerge victorious by a slender margin of 162 votes against Asif Shaikh Rashid of a local outfit -- Indian Secular Largest Assembly of Maharashtra.

The Malegaon Central Assembly segment has more than 78 per cent Muslim voters. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had not fielded a candidate here, while Congress nominee Ejaz Baig secured 7,527 votes.

Abu Asim Azmi of the Samajwadi Party (SP) polled 54,780 votes to win the Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar seat by a margin of 12,753 votes against his nearest rival, Ateeque Ahmad Khan of the AIMIM.

Ajit Pawar-led NCP's Nawab Malik, whose candidature appeared to upset the BJP-led Mahayuti, stood a distant fourth. Shiv Sena candidate Suresh Patil occupied the third position with 35,263 votes. The Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar seat has 53 per cent Muslim voters.

PM Narendra Modi says, "This Maharashtra election has exposed the double face of the INDI-Aghadi...The Congress leadership has constantly insulted Veer Savarkar across the country. They have even abused him. To get votes in Maharashtra, these people temporarily stopped abusing him. But not even once have they spoken the truth about Savarkar's sacrifice and this shows their double face. Their only motive is to defame Veer Savarkar."

PM Narendra Modi says, "Congress made laws for appeasement. They did not even care about the Supreme Court's order. An example of this is the Waqf Board. The people of Delhi will be surprised. The situation was that before leaving the government in 2014, these people had handed over many properties of Delhi and surrounding areas to the Waqf Board. There is no place for Waqf law in the Constitution given to us by Babasaheb Ambedkar, but the Congress did this to increase its vote bank..."

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday congratulated the BJP and its allies in Maharashtra for their landslide victory in the state polls and said Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray chose the wrong path due to his greed for power.

Speaking at a function organised at the party's state headquarters to celebrate its victory in neighbouring Maharashtra, Yadav said the election results were a lesson for Uddhav Thackeray and the NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar.

He said people have given their blessings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and voted for the BJP in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and other states.

Yadav reiterated that the soul of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray must have been in pain the day his party allied with the Congress.

The Congress on Saturday described the Maharashtra poll outcome as "inexplicable" and claimed that the level-playing field was disturbed in a targeted manner as part of a conspiracy to defeat it.

The opposition party, however, hailed the result in Jharkhand, saying the people of the state had categorically rejected the "politics of polarisation" peddled by the BJP.

"The Maharashtra assembly poll result is surprising, inexplicable for us," Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, stressing that it was not a victory of development, as projected by the BJP.

On Jharkhand, he said, "The people of Jharkhand have decisively rejected the politics of polarisation." Congress leader Pawan Khera said, as the principal opposition party, "we find it our responsibility to keep raising issues of transparency in elections".

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Saturday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for leading the party to an astounding victory in Maharashtra and said people have rejected the 'power-hungry and opportunistic' INDIA alliance.

While the party celebrated its win in the western state by bursting firecrackers here, Annamalai in a post on 'X,' said: "On behalf of @BJP4TamilNadu, we extend our heartiest wishes to our beloved PM Thiru @narendramodi for leading the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance to an astounding victory in Maharashtra. Heartiest congratulations to Thiru @Dev_Fadnavis and @BJP4Maharashtra on this incredible victory." Furthermore, he said: "Heartfelt thanks to the people of Maharashtra for the decisive mandate, which exemplifies the faith they entrust upon the ruling NDA government, which delivered good governance under the guidance of our Hon PM. The Mahayuti’s outstanding victory results from its commitment to the development and growth of the state, uplifting the marginalised, women, children, and farmers with its proactive policies and welfare measures.

On BJP's 'batenge toh katenge' slogan, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray says, "It did not work. Some things are secular like unemployment, inflation. Everyone is affected by it. So it did not work."

Nagpur, Maharashtra: On #MaharashtraElection2024, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says, "We were confident that we (Mahayuti) will get a majority and form the government in Maharashtra, but we got an unprecedented victory. The way the people of Maharashtra have shown their trust in Mahayuti, our responsibilities have increased and we will work to fulfil all the expectations of the people."

But today we can say that even those who won did not anticipate that this result would come. We were assuming that we will get the mandate. Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini says, "...Mahayauti government has got the historic win in the Maharashtra Assembly polls...I congratulate everyone...This is the win of PM Modi's vision and policies...Maharashtra people have voted for development under PM Modi's leadership..."

Rahul Gandhi on November 23 in his first reaction after the Maharashtra poll debacle said the defeat was 'unexpected' and will analyse the results in detail.

"Heartfelt thanks to the people of Jharkhand for giving a huge mandate to India. Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Chief Minister Hemant Soren ji, all the workers of Congress and JMM for this victory. This victory of the alliance in the state is a victory of the protection of water, forest and land along with the Constitution. The results of Maharashtra are unexpected and we will analyse them in detail. Thanks to all the voter brothers and sisters of the state for their support and to all the workers for their hard work," he said in a post on X.

Maharashtra: NCP leader Praful Patel says "People have given a clear mandate to the Mahayuti. Ajit Pawar will be elected leader of the NCP Legislative Party tomorrow and within 1-2 days we (BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP) will have a meeting and it will be clear who will lead the Mahayuti."

As BJP-led Mahayuti is set to form the government in Maharashtra, BJP leader Pankaja Munde says, "It is a very big victory of the Mahayuti...The response was more than we expected...We are very happy as the public has rejected fake narratives and accepted the politics of development..."

Congress Legislature Party leader Balasaheb Thorat lost from Sangamner by 10,560 votes; was MLA since 1985, according to the Election Commission of India.

Devendra Fadnavis, the political stalwart who rose from humble beginnings to become a key figure in Maharashtra politics, is on course to regain chief minister’s post -- a position he has held twice before. The 54-year-old leader, whose career has been marked by a blend of resilience and strategic manoeuvring, is positioned to lead the state for the third time following a decisive showing of the BJP in the assembly polls.

Fadnavis' political journey has been nothing short of remarkable. From serving as an obscure corporator to becoming the youngest mayor of Nagpur, he has strengthened his status as a prominent leader within his party. Notably, he is only the second Brahmin to serve as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, following the Shiv Sena's Manohar Joshi.

His ascent began in earnest ahead of the 2014 assembly elections, where he garnered significant support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leader Amit Shah. Modi famously referred to him as "Nagpur's gift to the country" during a campaign rally, underscoring the confidence placed in Fadnavis.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said there was no dispute over the chief minister's post and leaders of Mahayuti will decide on the issue together as the saffron party-led coalition is heading for a landslide victory.

Addressing reporters, Fadnavis said the results of the Maharashtra assembly polls show that the state supports PM Narendra Modi and also thanked women voters.

"The opposition’s efforts to propagate a fake narrative, and polarise voters based on religion was foiled by masses," said Fadnavis.

The deputy CM said he succeeded in breaking the 'chakravyuh' of opposition due to the support of voters, the BJP team and party leaders.

The landslide victory for ruling BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra will booster billionaire Gautam Adani-led group's USD 3-billion project to redevelop Mumbai slum of Dharavi into a "world-class" district.

Opposition Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) had pledged to reclaim all land given to the Adani group for redeveloping Asia's largest slum and promised to scrap the project altogether, if voted to power.

For Adani, who is facing bribery charges in a US court, the scrapping of his pet Dharavi project would have been a big setback.

With election results showing the BJP and its allies Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party factions led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, winning more than three-fourths of the 288 seats in the Maharashtra assembly, those anxieties have now been set to rest.

Bureaucrat-turned-politician Siddharth Kharat on Saturday won his maiden assembly election from Mehkar in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, defeating a candidate of the Shiv Sena, headed by CM Eknath Shinde.

Kharat, who defeated Sanjay Raymulkar by 5,219 votes, was a joint secretary in the state government, when he took voluntary retirement from the post in July this year and joined the Shiv Sena (UBT) ahead of the assembly elections.

Kharat's journey began in the remote village of Tadshivani, located in the Sindkhedaraja taluka of Buldhana district, and has taken him all the way to Mantralaya, the power house of Maharashtra.
