Boards and flexes welcoming Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with Indian and Russian national flags, adorn the national capital as the city prepares for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit.

The India–Russia relationship is “highly strategic in nature and extremely resilient to external pressure or interference," Chinese scholar Li Haidong told Global Times on Thursday.

Li, a professor at the China Foreign Affairs University, said the coordination between the two nations reflects a clear intent to further enhance their independent and autonomous capabilities.

"Through Putin's visit, India and Russia have jointly sent a clear message to the outside world: neither country is isolated," Li said, "On the contrary, the two sides enjoy extensive mutual support and strong complementarity… This means that sanctions and pressure from the US and the West against Russia and India is unlikely to succeed."

With Russian President Vladimir Putin visiting India, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praised the importance of the relationship with Moscow, stating that from oil and gas to defence equipment, which played a seminal role in Operation Sindoor, Russia has stood by India, and that the ties between the two countries remain independent of India’s relations with the US and China.

Speaking to ANI, Tharoor said President Putin’s visit comes at an important time, adding, “It’s hugely significant. First of all, it is a very important relationship, which has been for a long time. In today’s rather turbulent world, where so many relationships have become uncertain, it becomes important to shore up the ones we have. Secondly, the value of Russian friendship has been proven in recent years, particularly in two domains. Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and how India takes pride in his leadership.

Praising his resolute outlook, the Russian President further added that the Indian PM does not succumb to pressure from any country, including the US.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was speaking to Aaj Tak and India Today at the Kremlin and called India a major global player.

"Prime Minister Modi is not someone who succumbs to pressure easily. The Indian people can certainly take pride in their leader. This is absolutely obvious. His stance is unwavering and straightforward, without being confrontational. Our goal is not to provoke conflict; rather, we aim to protect our lawful rights. India does the same," he said.

Putin described his relationship with PM Modi as both professional and personal, rooted in mutual trust and long-term cooperation.

He called PM Modi a leader who sets "very challenging tasks" and drives India's high-growth trajectory with key initiatives like Make in India.

"Our collaborative endeavours with Prime Minister Modi carry significant weight because they transcend our mutual ties. Given its direct relevance to both nations, ensuring stability in key areas of engagement is crucial, as it helps secure the fulfilment of our objectives. Prime Minister Modi sets very challenging tasks for the country - and for himself in the first place, then for the administration, and eventually for the nation," he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India is being seen as a significant diplomatic event, given the current global landscape. Former Indian diplomat Rajiv Bhatia highlights the importance of this visit, citing India’s relations with the US, the Ukraine war, and recent G20 developments.

Speaking with ANI, Bhatia said that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India was very important, as it was his first since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, adding that the focus of the visit is expected to be on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in economic areas.

“I regard this as a very important visit, like most other observers, and there are reasons for it. The first visit by the Russian President since the Ukraine war, the first visit since tensions between India and the US reached a certain level, and certainly the first visit after the recent developments relating to G20. So there are many other dimensions as well. But we can say that, first of all, the focus will be on bilateral relations and how to deepen and strengthen this relationship. And I think the limelight will be on the economic dimensions,” he said.

-On Friday, Putin will attend the 23rd India-Russia Summit that is expected to produce a number of tangible outcomes to further broadbase the time-tested relationship between the two countries.

-Boosting defence ties, insulating India-Russia trade from external pressure and exploring cooperation in small modular reactors are set to be the focus of the summit between Putin and Modi, that is expected to be closely watched by Western capitals.

-Following the summit, the two sides are expected to seal several agreements including in areas of trade.

-Putin will also be accorded a ceremonial welcome and a tri-services guard of honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan, before he goes to Raj Ghat to pay homage at the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

-It will be followed by talks between the two leaders in a restricted format and with their delegations at Hyderabad House, the venue for the summit.

-Modi and Putin will also attend a business event jointly organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Roscongress at Bharat Mandapam.

-In the evening, Putin will attend a state banquet to be hosted in his honour by President Droupadi Murmu. The Russian leader is expected to leave India at around 9 pm on Friday.

The India-Russia collaboration is not directed against any country and it is solely aimed at safeguarding the national interests of the two sides, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said against the backdrop of Washington's aggressive approach towards New Delhi and Moscow.

In the context of India's energy ties with Russia, Putin said certain "actors" dislike New Delhi's growing role in international markets in view of its close relations with Moscow and these elements are aiming to constrain India's influence for political reasons by imposing "artificial obstacles".

In an interview to India Today news channel that was released on Thursday evening, the Russian president, referring to Western sanctions against Moscow, said his country's energy cooperation with New Delhi largely "remains unaffected".
