The infamous ‘Thak-Thak’ gang has resurfaced, creating fear among vehicle owners in several cities. Known for their unusual and frightening tactics, this gang usually operates under the cover of night, targeting vehicles on desolate roads.
In a recent development in Delhi, the police arrested a 29-year-old man named Amit, a resident of Uttam Nagar, who was allegedly part of the gang. He allegedly stole a Glock service pistol from a police officer’s car after smashing the window. Amit was apprehended by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) following a tip-off, according to a report by PTI.
How the ‘Thak-Thak’ gang operates
According to a report by News18, the gang is commonly seen near traffic signals, crowded streets, or deserted areas late at night. Their tactic involves making a sudden, loud “thak-thak” noise on a vehicle window or door. They then alarm the driver by shouting false warnings like, “Smoke is coming out of your tyre,” “Something has fallen under your vehicle,” or “Petrol is leaking.” The driver stops and steps out to inspect the vehicle, unaware of the gang members waiting to strike.
While the driver is distracted, other gang members either intimidate the passengers or steal valuables from inside the vehicle. Within minutes, they make off with items such as bags, mobiles, purses, or jewellery, leaving victims bewildered.
The gang often chooses targets with visible belongings, and they are known to exploit slow-moving traffic or isolated areas to facilitate a swift escape. Families, women, and elderly passengers are frequent victims of these crimes.
Originating in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru during the 2000s, the gang has grown into a widespread network. Many members are unemployed local youth drawn into crime by the lure of easy money.
They operate in small, well-planned groups, making it difficult for police to track them down despite multiple campaigns and arrests over the years. Some high-profile cases have also involved violence and stabbing.
In a notable case in Delhi in 2018, the gang threw stones at a car to force the driver to stop, thinking his tyre was punctured. As he got out, four to five gang members ambushed him, stealing his purse, mobile and jewellery. There have been numerous instances where the gang has not only looted but also engaged in violence and stabbing.
To stay safe, experts advise drivers to remain vigilant. If someone knocks on the window, all doors should stay locked, windows closed, and valuables kept out of sight. Mobile phones should not be left on dashboards, and bags or laptops should be stored securely in the boot.
