Heavy rainfall accompanied by winds, thunder, and lightening across Chennai brought some relief from the heat. The IMD has predicted partly cloudy skies with light rain in some areas for Chennai and its suburbs on Monday.

On Sunday, moderate to heavy rains with strong winds were recorded during the night, News Nine reported. Over the past few days, Chennai has seen a significant drop in mercury levels, with maximum temperatures now hovering around 34–35°C.

In its weather update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in the last 24 hours, key areas, such as Nungambakkam and Chennai city, recorded 24.7 mm and 24.5 mm of rainfall, respectively. As per the report, Other regions like Sivaganga and Valparai also received substantial rainfall on the night of June 22.

The maximum temperature in certain parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may rise 5°F above normal, but overall, the rain is expected to keep conditions pleasant, the report News Nine added.

As per the report, the southwest monsoon has reduced in recent days in Tamil Nadu. However, coastal and northern districts continue to experience wet weather. Avalanche in the Nilgiris recorded 2 cm of rain, while Chengalpattu received 11.5 mm. Private meteorologist Pradeep John has indicated that Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur are likely to see more rain in the coming days. Cuddalore district has already reported heavy downpours, with forecasts suggesting continued showers.

The IMD has noted that changes in westerly wind patterns are influencing rainfall distribution, leading to moderate showers in isolated areas. While the southwest monsoon’s impact has diminished, localized weather systems are still triggering rain in several parts of the state, the report added.
