Cab operators in Hyderabad have launched a ‘No AC campaign’ starting Monday to protest against the unfair rates charged by Ola, Uber, Rapido and other cab aggregators. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU) has demanded that ride-hailing companies implement a uniform fare structure which should include fuel costs, maintenance and drivers compensation.
It has demanded that the government should intervene to provide relief to cab drivers by regulating pricing policies for cab aggregators. The union had also organised a similar campaign in April 2024 citing the same reasons.
The TGPWU has said that drivers earn Rs 10-12/km after commission while the cost of operating with AC is Rs 16-18/km, making it infeasible for them to turn it on. Additionally, the TGPWU has requested customers to consider tipping drivers for offering AC services, and to understand the financial challenges borne by the cab drivers.
"The fare algorithms ignore rising fuel costs, maintenance and extreme summer heat. From this week, cab drivers will not turn on AC unless customers voluntarily tip to cover the cost. Our main demand is for a standard fare per kilometre that reflects operating costs and regulation of aggregator pricing policies. If the demands are not met, the TGPWU will escalate this campaign nationwide in collaboration with unions across India," said Shaik Salauddin, founder and president of the TGPWU.
Meanwhile, drivers have also boycotted airport trips in protest at the unfair fares charged by aggregators.
