In a heartbreaking case that has shocked Jaipur, nine-year-old Amaiyra, a Class 4 student of the prestigious Neerja Modi School, died after jumping from the fourth floor of the school building on November 1. Her parents allege that repeated complaints about bullying and harassment were ignored by the school.
According to a report by NDTV, Amaiyra’s mother, Shivani Meena, had raised alarms about her daughter’s distress for over a year. She even recorded a WhatsApp voice message of the child crying and pleading, “I don’t want to go to school... don’t send me,” and shared it with the class teacher. Shivani told NDTV she repeatedly reached out to the class teacher and coordinator, but her concerns were dismissed.
Her father, Vijay Meena, said he had confronted school staff during a Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) after noticing that a group of children were teasing Amaiyra. “The teacher told me this is a coed school and Amaiyra must learn to talk to all children, even the boys. I told the teacher that it’s my daughter’s choice if she does not want to talk to boys,” Vijay told NDTV.
Police sources informed NDTV that CCTV footage from the classroom shows Amaiyra walking up to her teacher twice shortly before she jumped. However, the footage reportedly has no audio — a violation of CBSE guidelines that mandate classroom audio recording. Her family has demanded to know why the footage lacks sound and why safety nets or railings were not installed on upper floors.
“We want answers. It’s a prestigious school charging high fees — but where is the accountability?” Amaiyra’s uncle, Sahil, told NDTV. He also questioned how the school received permission for additional floors without adequate child safety measures.
Jaipur’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rajarshi Raj Verma, confirmed to NDTV that the investigation is underway and that the parents’ statements have been recorded. “We are taking everything on record and verifying all details,” he said.
District Education Officer (Primary) Ramniwas Sharma told NDTV that the department will also record the parents’ statements in the presence of the police. While he said reports of “bad words” used among children had not yet reached his office, he confirmed that some students mentioned that Amaiyra was reluctant to attend school that day.
The school authorities have so far not issued a statement on the incident.
