The Seventh Day Adventist Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad has lodged a formal complaint against a mob of around 500 people, alleging severe rioting, assault on staff and vandalism causing an estimated Rs 15 lakh worth of damage.
According to a TOI report, the complaint was filed with the Khokhra police late on Wednesday night by Mayurika Patel, a staff member who has been with the school for 35 years.
The police have marked the case as "sensitive". Patel stated that a huge crowd forced its way onto the school premises, damaging property and attacking employees.
This violent incident, as reported by TOI, was triggered by the tragic death of a 15-year-old student, Nayan Santani.
The pupil was stabbed in the stomach during a scuffle with a juvenile on school grounds a day earlier. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Tuesday.
News of his death sparked considerable anger and by Wednesday afternoon, a large crowd had gathered at the school, directing their fury at the management and teachers for what they perceived as a failure to act swiftly after the initial attack.
The scale of the destruction was detailed in the complaint. The mob is alleged to have damaged seven CCTV cameras, building windows and the windshields of eight school buses and a car. Inside the classrooms, seven smart TVs and seven smart boards were also destroyed.
Patel also alleged that staff members were physically assaulted during the rampage. In her complaint, she reportedly stated, "I request a legal investigation against all individuals involved in these acts," adding that several staff members and eyewitnesses could assist the probe.
The Khokhra police have registered the case and an investigation is now underway.
