A 60-year-old daily wage worker in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district allegedly beheaded his second wife and her lover, before surrendering to police carrying their severed heads in bags.
The accused has been identified as K Kolanji, a woodcutter from Malaikottalam village near Kallakurichi. The victims were his second wife, K Lakhmi (40), and her alleged lover, K Thangarasu (57), a farmer from the same village.
According to the police, the crime took place on the terrace of Kolanji’s house. Police officials stated that Kolanji had suspicions about his wife’s relationship.
On Wednesday night, after pretending to be away from home, he returned unexpectedly and caught his wife and Thangarasu together. In a fit of rage, he attacked both of them with a sickle, killing them on the spot. He then beheaded the two bodies and placed the severed heads in a bag, India Today reported.
The gruesome double murder came to light when neighbours discovered the headless bodies lying on the terrace and immediately alerted the police. A team led by DSP S Thangavel reached the scene, conducted preliminary inquiries, and pressed a sniffer dog and forensic experts into service. The bodies were later sent for postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, Kolanji tied the severed heads to his two-wheeler and rode nearly 150 km to Vellore Central Prison, where he surrendered before the prison authorities. The officials quickly informed the Kallakurichi police, who took him into custody.
During interrogation, Kolanji admitted to the murders. He told the police that despite repeated warnings, his wife and her lover had refused to end their relationship, which drove him to commit the crime. Police have since recovered the sickle used in the killings, and a case has been registered by Vanjaram police.
