The hatchback segment in India has seen some legendary nameplates over the years, from the Maruti Suzuki Alto to the Hyundai i10 to the Tata Indica, to name a few. However, one model has revolutionised this space with its design, segment-first features and performance ever since its arrival in May 2005, and it is none other than the Maruti Suzuki Swift.
The Swift has completed 20 years in India, garnering volumes of 30,00,000 units in the domestic market alone. With a 31% share in its segment, the Swift contributes over 10% to Maruti's wholesales.
The second-generation Swift arrived in India in 2011, six years after the first generation. The third generation came in 2018. The popular hatchback is now in its fourth generation, which was launched in 2024.
The fourth-generation Swift debuted the new Z-Series, 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, which generates 81.58 PS of maximum power and 111.7 Nm of peak twisting force. The engine can be clubbed either with a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT. There is also a CNG option (69.75 PS and 101.8 Nm) mated to a 5-speed MT.
The Swift's mileage is claimed to be the best in its segment at 24.80 kmpl for the petrol MT, 25.75 kmpl for the petrol AMT and 32.85 kmpkg for the CNG MT.
The hatchback boasts features like a glossy black front grille, LED projector headlamps, boomerang LED DRLs, LED taillamps and 15-inch precision-cut dual-tone alloys. Inside the cabin, you get a Smartplay Pro+ 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, flat-bottom steering wheel, wireless charger and Arkamys sound system. Suzuki Connect offers over 40 connected car features.
The Swift offers six airbags as standard, right from the entry-level variant. Additionally, you also get electronic stability program (ESP), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), hill hold control, reverse parking sensors, 3-point seat belts, and seat belt reminder, enhancing the overall safety standard of the car. A 3-year/1,00,000 km warranty is standard.
Available in five variants -- LXi, VXi, VXi (O), ZXi and ZXi Plus -- the Swift is priced between Rs 6.49 lakh and Rs 9.65 lakh (ex-showroom).
