India's top passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki has appointed Kenichi Ayukawa as its new CEO and MD.

Ayukawa who has been one of its directors will take charge from April 1 as its current chief Shinzo Nakanishi will retire. Nakanishi has been the CEO and MD of Maruti since 2007.

According to the company website, Ayukawa joined Maruti's parent Suzuki Motor Corp in 1980 and has held several positions in the firm including Treasurer, American Suzuki Motor Corp in 1997, MD of Pak Suzuki Motor Co in 2004 and deputy executive general manager global marketing in 2008.

Ayukawa will take charge of Maruti's driving seat at a time passenger car sales in India have slumped on the back of expensive loans and high fuel prices, apart from the overall economic slowdown.

Maruti Suzuki's domestic sales last month declined 9 percent year-on-year to 97,955 units.

Its total sales so far this year (Apr-Feb) are up 4 percent to 10.51 lakh units, helped by strong demand for its newly launched Ertiga multi-utility vehicle and the compact DZire, which has offset sluggish demand for mini cars (sales down 12 percent), vans (down 23 percent) and mid-size SX4 (down 65 percent).
