Floods expose massive corruption in Philippines, 'Nepo Babies’ face backlash

Weeks of relentless rains have left large parts of the Philippines underwater, but the rising floodwaters have also triggered a tidal wave of public outrage. At the heart of the crisis are wealthy heirs flaunting their extravagant lifestyles while key infrastructure meant to protect communities from flooding has crumbled—raising serious questions about corruption.

While seasonal flooding is common in the Philippines, this year’s deluge has been exceptionally damaging. Roads have turned into rivers, entire towns are marooned, and hospitals are battling outbreaks of waterborne diseases like leptospirosis.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. recently admitted that some flood control projects, like a much-publicized dam, were never built at all. Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan revealed that up to 70% of allocated flood control funds were allegedly siphoned off. The scandal has already brought down powerful political figures- the House Speaker has resigned, and the Senate President has been ousted over ties to shady contractors.

Anger has now turned toward the children of the elite, dubbed "nepo babies" on social media. Filipinos online are sharing videos of these privileged offspring flaunting designer brands like Dior, Fendi, and Hermès, mocking them for living lavishly on the public’s dime. Many of those targeted have since gone silent, disabling comments or deleting accounts.

Much of the outrage is focused on Pacifico and Sarah Discaya, whose construction firm secured billions in public contracts. Once praised for their rags-to-riches success, the couple are now symbols of excess, thanks to resurfaced videos of their garage filled with matching luxury cars, including Porsches and Maybachs.

Meanwhile, a major anti-corruption protest is planned for September 21, the anniversary of martial law under the late dictator Marcos Sr. President Marcos Jr. has promised a full investigation to “unmask the swindlers,” while urging protesters to remain peaceful.
