'New Bangladesh Day' to be overserved on August 8

Bangladesh will observe August 8 as 'New Bangladesh Day' to mark the anniversary of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus being sworn in as interim leader last year. His appointment came three days after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, following a student-led uprising on August 5.

Every year this date will be marked as ‘New Bangladesh Day’ a decision that has sparked intense reactions across the country’s political and administrative circles.

The decision was approved by the General Administration Division of the Cabinet Division, which issued an official notification announcing it, according to local media reports.

According to local media reports, July 16  the day five people were killed in clashes between protesters and police during last year's agitation has been designated as ‘Shaheed Abu Sayed Day’ to honor the memory of the student believed to have been killed by police gunfire in Rangpur.

The Cabinet Division issued separate notifications for both commemorative dates. The notice states that “all relevant ministries, divisions, and agencies should appropriately observe these days each year.” These dates have been placed under the “Kha” category in the guidelines for national and international day observances.

During his visit to Japan, interim government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus announced that the next national elections would be held between December this year and June 2026. Following his statement, the Election Commission has directed its officials to expedite all necessary preparations for the polls.
