In a significant boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, the Union Territory government has reopened 12 more popular tourist destinations after nearly five months of closure. The decision comes as part of a phased strategy to revive the tourism industry following the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which killed 25 tourists and a ponywala, triggering widespread security concerns.
The attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam, led authorities to shut down almost 50 tourist locations across the region as a precautionary measure. Since then, the government has been cautiously reopening sites in phases, balancing safety with the need to restore the local economy. With this latest announcement, a total of 28 tourist spots have now been reopened, offering fresh hope to the valley’s tourism-dependent communities.
Destinations Now Open to Tourists
Of the newly reopened locations, seven are in Kashmir Division and five are in Jammu Division, reflecting the government’s push to spread tourism opportunities across the Union Territory.
In Kashmir, visitors can now explore:
"After a thorough security review and discussion in today's UHQ Meeting, I've ordered reopening of more tourist spots in Kashmir and Jammu Divisions, which were temporarily closed as precautionary measures," LG Manoj Sinha posted on X.

A Phased Revival of Tourism
This move follows the reopening of 16 tourist spots in June 2025, including Verinag, Kokernag, Achabal Gardens, Badamwari Park in Srinagar, Duck Park near Nigeen Lake, and Taqdeer Park near Hazratbal. These gradual steps are aimed at ensuring visitor safety while restoring confidence in Jammu and Kashmir as a premier travel destination.
Tourism industry stakeholders have been pushing for the reopening of all major destinations, highlighting that prolonged closures were crippling local businesses, hotels, transport operators, and artisans who rely heavily on seasonal tourism. The reopening is seen as a lifeline for many who were facing severe financial strain.
What Lies Ahead for Tourism in J&K
While the reopening of 12 new sites is a welcome development, popular winter destinations like Doodhpathri and Yousmarg remain closed. Industry experts are urging the government to expedite their reopening ahead of the autumn and winter travel season, traditionally considered one of the busiest for Jammu and Kashmir.
Before the April attack, the region was witnessing a strong rebound in tourism, buoyed by infrastructure upgrades such as the Vande Bharat Express train service and the successful Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. The phased reopening of tourist sites, coupled with enhanced security measures, is expected to help Jammu and Kashmir regain momentum and reassure domestic as well as international travellers.
A Step Toward Economic Revival
Tourism forms the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, contributing significantly to employment and local livelihoods. The reopening of 12 more destinations is not just about restoring access to scenic landscapes and heritage sites—it represents resilience, recovery, and a cautious optimism for the future.
With the government’s commitment to safety and promotion of tourism, the Union Territory is once again preparing to welcome visitors eager to experience its pristine valleys, adventure activities, cultural landmarks, and spiritual sites.
