India is dotted with countless temples, each with its own unique story and spiritual significance. Yet, tucked away in the narrow lanes of Pune’s Somwar Peth lies a truly rare gem—the Trishund Mayureshwar Ganpati Mandir. For centuries, this temple has quietly captivated devotees and history enthusiasts alike.

A Rare and Majestic Depiction of Lord Ganesha

Unlike the usual images of Ganesha with a single trunk riding a mouse, this temple features an extraordinary idol of Lord Ganesha with three trunks and six arms, seated majestically on a peacock. This unique portrayal gives the temple its name—Trishund, meaning “three trunks,” and Mayureshwar, the Lord who rides a peacock.

A Window into History and Architecture

Built between 1754 and 1770 by Mahant Bhimjigiri Gosavi, who migrated from Dhampur near Indore to Pune, the temple is nestled deep within Somwar Peth’s winding alleys. It stands as a silent witness to Pune’s rich heritage, faith, and artistry.

Intricate Artistry and Sacred Inscriptions

The temple walls are adorned with inscriptions in Devanagari, Persian, and Sanskrit—featuring verses from the Bhagavad Gita that offer spiritual wisdom alongside historical insight. The façade is richly decorated with carvings of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and an array of mythological creatures like peacocks, parrots, and even a rhinoceros being tied by a British soldier—a fascinating glimpse into history.

At the entrance to the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), a sculpture of Goddess Lakshmi flanked by two elephants symbolizes prosperity and protection.

The Secret Basement: A Meditation Sanctuary

One of the temple’s most intriguing features is its basement, believed to have served as a meditation hall for ascetics. Usually flooded due to a natural water inlet, this space is opened only once a year on Guru Purnima, when it is cleaned and dried for devotees to pay respects at the samadhi (memorial) of Bhimjigiri Gosavi.

Why Visit Trishund Mayureshwar Ganpati Mandir?

Deeply woven into Pune’s cultural fabric, this temple stands apart among the city’s many Ganpati shrines. Closely linked to the Giri Gosavi sect, it offers visitors a unique blend of spirituality, history, and artistic heritage.

More than just a place of worship, the temple is a quiet storyteller of Pune’s past and culture—an offbeat treasure waiting to be discovered by travelers and devotees alike.

A Must-Visit Hidden Gem in Pune

Next time you find yourself in Pune, venture beyond the familiar landmarks and explore the winding lanes of Somwar Peth. The Trishund Mayureshwar Ganpati Mandir awaits—a vibrant tapestry of devotion, history, and architectural beauty that promises an unforgettable experience.
