According to a new study published in Frontiers in Psychology, which investigated how AI compares to human emotions and understanding and responding to different needs, it has been observed that ChatGPT-4 has outperformed psychologists in understanding complex emotions.
180 male psychologists from King Khalid University in Saudi Arabia participated in this study, and they were divided into bachelor's and doctoral student groups according to their educational backgrounds. Further, each participant had to respond to 64 different scenarios and ChatGPT-4 got the highest score of 59 out of 64.
After that Bing AI had the second-highest scores, while Google Gemini had scores similar to human psychologists seeking bachelor’s degrees and had lower scores than several doctoral students.
These advancements hint that AI might solve our basic healthcare needs, and would always be our side. Previously, OpenAI had also said that ChatGPT-4 is better at writing, math, logical reasoning, and coding, and it has all the charts to prove this claim.
The findings also serve as a benchmark for future development of AI systems intended for psychotherapy and counselling. The data also proves that it can trump human performance in social intelligence tasks and proves that AI can be used for a variety of mental health services or psychological tasks.
However, the study also highlights significant issues regarding AI development, training, and ethical application. In areas like mental health where the capacity for empathy and the formation of therapeutic alliances is generally thought to be exclusively human, there can be severe consequences if AI is overused or the dependence on it grows in the future.
