Popular Android smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and more have released their foldable smartphones in the last few years. In contrast, Apple has yet to release its first foldable smartphone leaving many fans wondering when, or even if, a foldable iPhone would ever materialise.
However, things could change soon. According to a new report by The Information, Apple is planning to release a clamshell-style flip phone. The report notes that the company has been developing two folding iPhone prototypes since February. The device has allegedly been given a codename of ‘V68’ by Apple, suggesting that work is ramping up.
Moreover, the report further adds that the Cupertino-based tech giant could release this foldable iPhone in 2026. It also indicates, that ‘the idea has moved beyond the conceptual stage’ and is now ‘in development with suppliers.’ We can expect this upcoming iPhone to have a size like existing iPhones, with similar length and width, but not necessarily in thickness.
This means a foldable iPhone that offers a larger display experience while remaining pocketable when closed, could be a reality soon. Previously, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also reported that the company is working on a 20.3-inch foldable MacBook, likely to be released by 2027.
Aside from its plans in the foldable category, the report by The Information adds that Apple is getting ready to upgrade next year’s iPhones with a mechanical aperture camera. It will let users achieve a natural depth-of-field effect, blurring the background of an image while keeping the subject in focus, like modern DSLR cameras.
