World's number one ODI batter Smriti Mandhana scripted history on Sunday (October 12) as she became the first cricketer to score 1000 runs in ODIs in a single calendar year. Playing in Visakhapatnam, Mandhana needed just 18 runs to reach the milestone. The India opener completed a thousand runs in the ICC Women's World Cup match against Australia by hitting Sophie Molineux for a maximum in the eighth over.
Mandhana broke former Australia batter Belinda Clark's record of 970 ODI runs in a single year.

After completing her fifty at the ACA-VDCA Stadium she also became the second Indian women cricketer to score 5000 or more runs. The 29-year-old took 112 innings and 5569 deliveries to reach the milestone. Now, she only behind former India captain Mithali Raj (7805 runs) who is also on top of the chart in the ODI format history.
Before the Australia game, Mandhana had scores of 8, 23 and 23 against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa respectively earlier in the World Cup. It looked like she saved her best for the best opposition as Mandhana batted with brilliant fluency and authority. She played with the field with precision and some of her shots were superb.
