Jasprit Bumrah didn’t hold back from pointing out the flaws in cricket’s technology after West Indies batter John Campbell survived a close call just six runs short of his century in the second Test in New Delhi, which he eventually reached. It took the hosts four innings and a follow-on to finally show some resistance, with Campbell and Shai Hope stitching a solid 177-run stand for the third wicket.
The West Indies once again looked down the barrel after slipping to 10 for 2 early in their innings, but Hope and Campbell responded strongly to India’s decision to enforce the follow-on.
Campbell would have had his heart in his mouth when the ball from Bumrah struck him on the pads as he was so close to a personal milestone. An enormous appeal followed, but the umpire disagreed and shook his head. Things took an intriguing turn after Bumrah took the review and had a brief conversation with wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel and skipper Shubman Gill.
For the third-umpire to render a decision, it was inconclusive because it appeared that the ball and bat collision with the pads occurred simultaneously. The third-umpire upheld the initial ruling of not-out after examining the moment carefully as Ultra-Edge failed to display a distinct spike for the ball striking the pad and bat.
However, Bumrah had a slight jab at umpire Richard Illingworth while walking back to take his run-up. "It's out. You know it as well, but the technology can't prove it," he said with a smile. Bumrah had good reason to be disappointed. On the morning of Day 4, he bowled brilliantly for India, but failed to make any inroad. Campbell was stranded at 94 for four overs as Bumrah had him on his toes.

To the pleasure of the West Indies team, Campbell finally broke free, hitting a six off Ravindra Jadeja to reach his century. Coach Darren Sammy's joy knew no limits as his teammates cheered from the dressing room. As an opener, Campbell is just the sixth centurion for the West Indies since 2020.
