Shubman Gill may have missed out on breaking the record of legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar set five decades ago, but he surely earned the respect of 'Little Master'. The Indian skipper received a gift from Gavaskar after Stumps on Day 3 of the Oval Test. Gavaskar presented Gill with a signed cap and a shirt, honouring his contribution in the ongoing series against England, which in all likelihood is heading towards a 2-2 outcome.
“This is a little cap, which I give to very few people with my signature,” Gavaskar told Gill as he handed the gift.

Gill amassed 754 runs from 10 innings, which is 21 short of Gavaskar’s record of most runs by an Indian in a Test series. Gavaskar had scored 774 runs in the 1971 Test series against the West Indies.
Gavaskar also mentioned that he will wear his lucky jacket on Day 4, which is currently underway. Gavaskar added he had worn the same jacket during India’s incredible win against Australia at the Gabba in 2021, which featured a crucial 91-run knock by Gill.

Meanwhile, Gill’s batting played a key role in keeping the five-match series against England alive. Although he couldn't top the overall chart of becoming the Indian with most runs in a Test series but he did surpass Gavaskar in the list of Indian captains with most runs. Gavaskar's 732 runs from the 1978/79 series against West Indies led the chart for 46 years before Gill overtook the Indian legend in his debut series as Test captain.

Gavaskar reflected on Gill's performance and rated his 754 runs much higher than his record. “Well, yes, in anticipation of him going past my record, I had gotten something for him. This is all in God's hands. But 754 runs, it's fantastic. The difference is that 754 runs have come with him having the additional responsibility of being the captain,” said Gavaskar while speaking to Sanjana Ganesan and Cheteshwar Pujara on Sony Sports Network.
“Mine, I was the baby of the team, it wouldn't have mattered. If I failed, nobody would have given a hoot. As the captain, to score 754 runs. More than 750 runs, where he is making the difference to his side's fortunes. Don't go by those 20 runs, just see what those 754 runs have done for Indian cricket,” he added.
