‘Rs 4 lakh a month not enough’: Supreme Court issues notice to Mohammed Shami on Hasin Jahan’s plea

In response to a petition submitted by Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami's estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, the Supreme Court of India has sent a notice to the fast bowler and the West Bengal government. Jahan appealed to the highest court, requesting an increase in Shami's alimony, which the Calcutta High Court had approved for her and her daughter. Jahan has contested a prior Calcutta High Court decision that awarded her Rs 1.5 lakh a month and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter's care, arguing that the funds are insufficient.

In response to her appeal, the Supreme Court has now asked for a four-week response from Shami and the West Bengal administration. A hearing on the subject is planned for after this time.

As Hasin Jahan is adamant on obtaining a larger financial settlement for herself and her child, this legal move represents a new chapter in the ongoing conflict between her and Shami.

Since 2018, Shami and Hasin Jahan have been involved in a legal and personal conflict that includes claims of dowry harassment, domestic abuse, and a protracted maintenance dispute.

A criminal complaint involving charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code was filed against Shami as a result of these accusations. The couple's emotional and legal problems worsened even after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cleared Shami of any fixing allegations.

Shami was also asked if he regretted getting married to Jahan during an interview. In response, he had said: "Leave that. I never regret the past. What's gone is gone. I don't want to blame anyone, including myself. I want to focus on my cricket. I don't need these controversies."

Several Indian cricketers have experienced difficult marriages, much like Shami. In an interview, Shami responded bluntly when asked about marital problems among cricketers. "That's your job to investigate. Why do you want to hang us to death? Look at the other side as well. I focus on cricket, not controversies," he said.
