Prithvi Shaw gave a strong response to his critics and smashed the third fastest double century in the Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra and Chandigarh on Monday. Shaw took 141 balls to reach the milestone. The 25-year-old Maharashtra opener eventually returned unbeaten on 222 off 156 balls, featuring a staggering 29 boundaries and five maximums. This was after Maharashtra decided to declare their innings at 359/3.
Earlier, Shaw took only 72 balls to reach his hundred, which is the seventh-fastest in India's premier red-ball domestic competition. He missed out on the top five fastest Ranji centurions by only four balls. The 150-mark took him only 105 balls, as per Wisden.

He endured a forgettable start to Ranji Trophy 2025-26 while debuting for Maharashtra. He got out for duck in the first innings of the previous match against Kerala at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The 25-year-old opener, however, redeemed himself in the second innings, scoring a sparkling 75. The match eventually ended in a draw.
Shaw's redemption arc since switching from Mumbai to Maharashtra has been noteworthy. He previously scored 111 off 141 balls in his first innings for Maharashtra in the Buchi Babu Trophy match against Chhattisgarh. In a practice match against his former side Mumbai ahead of Ranji Trophy, Shaw had hammered a splendid 181 off 220 balls, featuring 21 fours and 3 sixes. He had then almost got into a physical altercation with Musheer, Sarfaraz Khan's younger brother.
Shaw switched to Maharashtra after disciplinary action against him by Mumbai last season. He was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad and questions were raised regarding his fitness and discipline. He then went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction and requested for a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from Mumbai ahead of the new season.
