ICC Champions Trophy 2025: India are playing the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 without their star fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah. The 31-year-old was ruled out of the ICC mega-event due to a lower back injury he suffered while playing the fifth and final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Bumrah who was named ICC Men's Cricketer Of The Year for 2024 was initially named in the provisional squad announced by BCCI but was replaced by Harshit Rana as he failed to win the race against time.
Bumrah's absence came has a huge blow for Rohit Sharma-led Team India as the pacer was in sensational form last year. In 21 matches across all formats, Bumrah took 86 wickets for India in 2024. For his terrific performance last year, he won the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year awards. In his absence, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami is expected to lead the Indian bowling attack from the front alongside Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana.
Ahead of India's opening match, sports presenter Sanjana Ganesan, who is also Jasprit Bumrah’s wife, shared a significant update on his fitness during an interview with Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Sanjana revealed that Bumrah has begun training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru as part of his recovery from a back injury.
“He is okay. He is training at the NCA," Sanjana said when Miraz asked her, “How is Bumrah?"
In the 2025 Champions Trophy, Team India have kicked off its campaign against Bangladesh on Thursday, February 20, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Shanto unfazed by Bumrah's absence
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto remained unfazed by Jasprit Bumrah's absence from the Indian squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Shanto was asked whether his team felt relieved not to be facing the star pacer.
Initially, Shanto sidestepped the question and instead emphasized Bangladesh’s preparation for the tournament. However, when the reporter brought up Bumrah again, the Bangladesh skipper reiterated that his focus remains on executing the team's plans rather than concentrating on any individual player from the opposition.
"I'm not someone thinking about any individual cricketer. I think they have a lot of quality players, so we are thinking about how we execute our plans," Shanto said.
