India all-rounder Axar Patel missed out on a hat-trick in India's first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday (February 20). Patel first got the wickets of Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim off the second and third ball of the ninth over before captain Rohit Sharma dropped a regulation catch in the slip position off the fourth ball to deny the left-arm spinner his hat-trick.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first against the Men in Blue. Axar was the one who reduced Bangladesh to 35 after Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana joined hands to get the first three wickets. Watch the video here...

Realizing his mistake, Rohit slapped the ground in frustration before apologizing to Axar Patel. Though Axar responded with a wry smile, his disappointment over the missed opportunity was clear.

Things did not go as planned for the Bangladesh cricket team after electing to bat first as they lost five wickets in no time. Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy later on kept their cool helping their side reach close to the 100-run mark.

Earlier, India lost the toss, but Rohit mentioned that the team intended to field first in Dubai regardless. The bowlers executed their plans flawlessly, restricting Bangladesh to 39/5 within the powerplay.

Mohammed Shami struck early, claiming two quick wickets by dismissing Soumya Sarkar and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. With this, he now has 20 wickets in ICC ODI matches since 2015, second only to Trent Boult, boasting an impressive strike rate of 19.8. Harshit Rana took another wicket, while Axar Patel added two to his tally.

From the previous ODI game India played against England earlier this month, they made two changes to the playing eleven bringing in Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja in place of left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
