The reason behind Gujarat Titans pacer Kagiso Rabada's long absence from IPL 2025 has finally been revealed. The bowler released a statement earlier on Saturday evening, confirming that he is currently serving a provisional suspension for the use of recreational drug.
“As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons. This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug. I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations.
“I am serving a provisional suspension and I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing,” the pacer said in his statement, thus ending the mystery behind his sudden and long absence from the T20 competition.
The pacer had left for South Africa after making just two appearances for the Gujarat Titans this season. He was acquired by the franchise for Rs 10.75 crore at the mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last year. In both the matches, Rabada failed to match his reputation and leaked 83 runs at an economy of over 10, while managing just two wickets.
Rabada in his statement also thanked his agent, Cricket South Africa (CSA), and Gujarat Titans for their support.
“I couldn’t have gone through this alone. I’d like to thank my agent, CSA, and Gujarat Titans for their support. I’d also like to thank SACA and my legal team for their guidance and counsel. Most importantly, I’d like to thank my friends and family for their understanding and love,” he added.
“Moving forward, this moment will not define me, I will keep doing what I have always done, continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft.”

However, Rabada's absence hasn't hurt GT much as they currently sit second on the points table with Indian quick Prasidh Krishna leading the pack. The pacer has been clinical and is leading the Purple Cap tally.
