Introduced in the IPL's inaugural season in 2008, the Purple Cap has been claimed by some of the finest bowlers in T20 cricket. Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir was the first winner, taking 22 wickets in 11 matches for Rajasthan Royals during their only title-winning season.
Over the years, legends like Lasith Malinga, Dwayne Bravo, and Harshal Patel have topped the wicket charts. The standout performances remain Bravo and Harshal’s record 32-wicket hauls in 2013 and 2021, respectively. Kagiso Rabada is the only other bowler to cross the 30-wicket mark, claiming 30 scalps in IPL 2020.

Bravo, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Harshal Patel have each won the Purple Cap twice. Bhuvneshwar remains the only player to win it in consecutive seasons (2016, 2017). Only three players—Tanvir (2008), RP Singh (2009), and Bhuvneshwar (2016)—have won both the Purple Cap and the IPL title in the same year.

Indian bowlers have dominated the honor, winning it nine times in 17 completed seasons, with RP Singh being the first Indian recipient in 2009 for Deccan Chargers.

Since the IPL's inception in 2008, the Orange Cap has been awarded to some of cricket’s finest batters. Australia’s Shaun Marsh was the first winner with 616 runs for Kings XI Punjab. Legends like Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Virat Kohli have since claimed the honor. Also Read - IPL 2025: Rohit Sharma’s 'leaked' chat with Zaheer Khan sparks Mumbai Indians controversy buzz among fans

Kohli’s 973-run campaign in IPL 2016 remains the highest in a single season, with Shubman Gill (890 in 2023) coming closest. Gayle is the only player to win consecutive Orange Caps (2011, 2012), while Warner holds the record with three wins (2015, 2017, 2019). Kohli joined the multiple-winner club after reclaiming the cap in 2024 with 741 runs.

Only Robin Uthappa (2014) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021) have won both the Orange Cap and the IPL title in the same year. Indians have won the honor seven times, with Sachin Tendulkar becoming the first in 2010.
