The India vs New Zealand Women's T20 World Cup witnessed a controversial moment involving Kiwi batter Amelia Kerr. The incident took place in the final ball of the 14th over as New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine and Kerr were batting in the middle. After taking a quick single, Devine tried to steal another run, which caught Kerr at the non-striker end off guard. Kerr, however, obliged to her skipper and tried to complete the double but in the process lost her wicket.
However, umpires came to Kerr's rescue directing the ball was dead, leaving Harmanpreet Kaur fuming. The Indian skipper, who was the fielder involved, was asked by the on-field umpires to join for a chat as Kerr made her way to the pavilion. The Kiwi batter was, however, stopped near the boundary ropes by the fourth official as India coach Amol Muzumdar also joined the debate from the sidelines.
After an intense discussion, which started inside the 30-yard circle, Harmanpreet along with her deputy Smriti Mandhana were seen chatting with the fourth official near the boundary rope. While both were not pleased with the decision, Smriti patted Harmanpreet's back and the proceedings resumed.
The decision, however, didn't cost India much as Kerr was dismissed for 13(22) in the next over by Renuka Thakur.
But it was enough for fans to lash at the umpires on social media, with many calling it as "worst umpiring ever". Ravichandran Ashwin, who is known to be a great analyst of the game, also seemed perplexed with the turn of events. "The over was called before the start of the second run. Whose fault is this really?" the spinner wrote on X.

Meanwhile, riding on a brilliant effort by skipper Devine, New Zealand piled a stiff 160/4 on the board after opting to bat first. She finished unbeaten on 57 off 36 balls, which featured seven boundaries. Earlier, the opening pair of Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer produced quite a show to accumulate 55/0 in the powerplay.
Deepti Sharma was the most expensive among the Indian bowlers as she leaked 45 runs in her full quota of overs without accounting for a single scalp. Seamers Renuka Thakur and Arundhati Reddy were economical, as the two combined to scalp three wickets and gave just 55 in the eight overs between them.
