Amit Mishra admits to age fraud to enter cricket

Veteran India spinner Amit Mishra stunned many by publicly admitting that he was involved in age fudging in the nascent stage of his international career. He made the big revelation while discussing a hilarious episode involving India captain Rohit Sharma and the spinner on a podcast ('Unplugged' by Shubhankar Mishra).

The episode was not from long ago, in fact it took place in the previous edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) after a match between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. Poking fun at Mishra, Rohit had then jokingly remarked about the spinner's age.

The video didn't take long to go viral on social media. In the video Rohit can be heard asking Mishra "how come you are just 40? It means you're just three years elder to me."

To which Mishra replied "I'm 41" and even challenged Rohit to check his documents. Rohit, who still couldn't believe Mishra, then responded: "You made your debut when we were in our nappies. That's when you made your debut." He then asked: "You made your debut when you were 20?" following which Mishra responded: "Yes. 20-21."

Mishra, however, chose to end the mystery and revealed that upon direction from his coach he reduced his age by a year. "Let me tell you, I have a one-year discrepancy, and my coach helped with that. I didn't even know about it. The coach called my home and asked for one more year for me. It was quite an emotional story. I was surprised and asked, 'How?' He said, 'From today, you are one year younger; now you have two more years.' I agreed," said Mishra.

Coming back to the episode involving Rohit, the spinner said that he too asked Rohit if he was really 37.

"Not diapers, but he said when we were young. I told him, 'I also watched someone play when I was young.' Many people start playing early; it doesn't mean they are now 45 or 50. He laughed and said, 'I'm 37.' I later confirmed and said, 'Are you really 37?' He laughed and didn't say anything," said Mishra.

"If I had questioned that are you 37, what would have happened? But I thought, it's okay, we were joking, and he joked with me. And that's how it is with me, joking around with him. It's been going on for a long time, not just today," he added.
