Recently, NASA issued a warning that a giant 110-foot asteroid named 2024 RN16 was expected to approach Earth on 15 September. However, it didn't happen, and the asteroid safely passed by Earth. Predictions about the end of the Earth frequently surface, often tied to astronomical events. Although these apocalyptic forecasts often create a buzz, this one was no different.
If asteroid 2024 RN16 had hit Earth, the damage would have been immense. Its impact could have triggered an explosion in the atmosphere, creating a massive shockwave. However, the asteroid safely passed by, leaving Earth unscathed.
Despite the relief of a near miss, many netizens expressed their humour-filled disappointment online. Social media platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Reddit were flooded with memes. Users jokingly lamented the asteroid’s failure to strike, with many quipping they had to return to daily life.
'Asteroid as soon as he realised...'

With memes and posts joking about the asteroid’s "betrayal," phrases like "Asteroid ne fir se dhokha de diya" (the asteroid betrayed us again) became a trending topic. It seems even in close encounters with space, humour remains Earth’s most enduring trait.

Social media is a hub for memes and will continue to be one, but asteroid collisions occur more frequently than many realise. NASA estimates that 48.5 tonnes of meteoric material enter Earth's atmosphere each day, typically burning up as shooting stars. However, larger objects are much rarer. Although asteroid collisions are unlikely, they are not impossible.
To reduce these risks, NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) operate programmes to detect, classify, and monitor Near Earth Objects (NEOs). These efforts help ensure better preparedness for potential asteroid impacts.
