Sawan Shivratri 2025 Date & Time: When is the Auspicious Day to Worship Lord Shiva?

Sawan Shivratri, also known as Shravana Shivratri, is one of the most sacred days to worship Lord Shiva during the holy month of Sawan (Shravan). In 2025, this highly auspicious day falls on Wednesday, July 23. This festival is observed with immense devotion, especially across North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab, where the Purnimanta calendar is followed.

In South and Western states—such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, where the Amanta lunar calendar is prevalent, the same day corresponds to Ashadha Shivratri.

Significance of Sawan Shivratri

Sawan Shivratri is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the supreme deity of destruction and transformation. It holds special significance because it falls during the Sawan month, which is considered one of the holiest months in Hinduism for Shiva worship. Fasting, night-long prayers, and ritualistic worship during this day are believed to bring blessings, peace, and prosperity.

Sawan Shivratri Vrat Vidhi (Fasting and Rituals)

Observing the Sawan Shivratri Vrat is considered spiritually rewarding. Here’s how devotees follow the traditional vrat vidhi:

  • Trayodashi Tithi (a day before Shivratri): Devotees eat only once, preparing their body and mind for the fast.
  • Shivratri Sankalp: On the day of Shivratri, after the morning bath, devotees take a sankalp (vow) to fast throughout the day and worship Lord Shiva. The fast is usually observed without water or food (nirjala), but some observe it with fruits and milk.
  • Evening Bath & Puja: Before performing the Shiva Puja at night, a second bath is taken. Devotees visit temples or perform Shivling abhishekam at home with offerings like belpatra, milk, honey, curd, water, and dhatura.
  • Shivratri Night Vigil (Jaagaran): Many stay awake throughout the night, chanting Om Namah Shivaya, and reading Shiva scriptures.
  • Breaking the Fast (Parana): The vrat is concluded the next morning, ideally between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi. However, some traditions prefer to wait until Chaturdashi ends.Spiritual Importance of Sawan Shivratri

According to legends, it is believed that Lord Shiva consumed the poison Halahala during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save the universe, and this act is commemorated during Sawan. Devotees observe fast and offer water and milk on the Shivling, seeking his blessings for health, wealth, and peace.

Other Festivals Around Sawan Shivratri

Just after Sawan Shivratri, another important festival—Hariyali Amavasya—is observed, especially in North India. It marks the start of monsoon-related rituals and is closely tied with agricultural and seasonal changes.

Sawan Shivratri 2025, falling on July 23, is a spiritually potent time to connect with Lord Shiva. By observing the fast with devotion and performing the correct rituals, devotees can attain divine blessings and inner strength. Whether you're fasting or attending temple rituals, this sacred night offers a chance to reflect, purify, and align oneself with the cosmic energy of Mahadev.
