Kurma Jayanti, the sacred occasion marking the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu’s Kurma Avatar, will be celebrated this year on Monday, May 12, 2025. Devotees across India and beyond observe this day with reverence and spiritual enthusiasm.
What is Kurma Jayanti?
Kurma Jayanti is dedicated to the second incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu in the form of a tortoise. This avatar appeared during the Satya Yuga, a time when the universe was undergoing a major cosmic event—Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean).
Why Did Lord Vishnu Take the Kurma Avatar?
According to Hindu scriptures, when Mount Mandarachala was used as a churning rod during the Samudra Manthan, it began to sink due to its immense weight. To restore balance and help complete the divine process, Lord Vishnu took the form of a giant tortoise (Kurma) and supported the mountain on his back, allowing the gods and demons to continue the churning.
This selfless act symbolizes divine support and stability during turbulent times, making Kurma Jayanti a deeply symbolic and spiritually important festival.
Though some confusion arises around the exact date—May 11 or May 12—based on tithi timings and regional calendar differences, most Hindu calendars mark May 12, 2025 (Monday) as the official celebration day.
