The sacred month of Sawan (Shravan) has begun today, and with it, the deeply spiritual Kawad Yatra 2025 also starts. This annual pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in India, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Starting from July 11, 2025, lakhs of devotees—known as Kanwariyas—embark on foot to collect Ganga Jal (water from the holy river Ganga) from spiritual sites like Haridwar, Gangotri, and Gaumukh. This water is then respectfully offered to Shivlingas in temples, especially on Sawan Somwars (Mondays), believed to be highly auspicious for Shiva bhakts.

Let’s explore why Kanwariyas carry the Kawad on their shoulders and the deeper meanings hidden in this sacred journey.

What Is a Kawad?

The Kawad is a bamboo pole with two water pots tied at either end, carried across the shoulders by devotees. It is more than just a physical object—it is a symbol of faith, endurance, and spiritual discipline.

Why Is the Kawad Yatra So Important?

The Kawad Yatra holds immense religious significance. It is believed that the Ganga water collected by devotees and poured over Shivlingas pleases Lord Shiva and absolves past sins. The act of walking long distances barefoot, carrying the weight of the Kawad, is seen as a form of penance (tapasya) and surrender to the divine.

Spiritual Meaning of Carrying the Kawad on the Shoulder

  1. Inspired by Lord Ram’s Devotion: According to sacred Hindu stories, Lord Ram was the first to perform a Kawad Yatra. He carried Ganga water on his shoulders to offer it for the salvation of his father, King Dasharatha. This act became the foundation for the tradition.
  2. Tribute to Shravan Kumar’s Service: Another popular tale linked to the Yatra is that of Shravan Kumar, who carried his blind parents in a sling (Kawad) on a pilgrimage. His selfless devotion is echoed in the Kanwariyas' journey.
  3. Symbol of Austerity and Sacrifice: Walking barefoot with the heavy Kawad in the hot monsoon weather is not easy. This physical hardship is an expression of deep faith and spiritual discipline, showcasing the devotee’s willingness to renounce comfort for divine blessings.
  4. Letting Go of Ego: Placing the Kawad on one’s shoulder signifies humility. It represents the renunciation of ego and worldly pride, a key teaching in Shaivism.
  5. Path to Purification: Offering Ganga water to Lord Shiva is believed to wash away sins. But this purification is meant to inspire a change in character, not be treated as a shortcut to cleanse repeated wrongdoing.
  6. Devotion Beyond Limits: Kanwariyas walk hundreds of kilometers simply out of love for Lord Shiva. Their absolute faith and dedication are the soul of the Yatra. Many chant bhajans and spiritual songs throughout the journey, transforming the path into a mobile temple of devotion.

During this time, devotees across North India—especially from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan—will participate in the pilgrimage. Roads leading to pilgrimage spots are often filled with the orange-clad Kanwariyas, singing and chanting “Bol Bam.”

The Kawad Yatra is not just a ritual; it is a spiritual journey of self-sacrifice, humility, and unwavering faith in Lord Shiva. As this sacred Yatra begins today, it reminds us of the power of devotion and the strength that comes from surrendering to the divine.
