The sacred month of Margashirsha holds immense importance in Hinduism. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says, “Among the months, I am Margashirsha,” signifying its divine significance. The new moon day of this month, known as Margashirsha Amavasya or Agahan Amavasya, is devoted to worshipping Lord Vishnu, Chandra Dev, and honoring one’s ancestors (Pitru). This day is considered as auspicious as Kartik Amavasya and is believed to cleanse one’s sins through charity and devotion.
Margashirsha Amavasya 2025 Date and Shubh Muhurat
According to the Vedic Panchang, Margashirsha Amavasya in 2025 will begin at 9:43 AM on November 19 and end at 12:16 PM on November 20. Therefore, the auspicious day for observance will be Thursday, November 20, 2025.
On this sacred day, devotees wake up early, perform holy baths (Snan), offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and Chandra Dev, and make donations for peace, prosperity, and the upliftment of ancestors.
Significance of Bathing and Charity
Taking a holy dip in sacred rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, or Godavari is considered extremely meritorious. If visiting a pilgrimage site is not possible, bathing at home by mixing Ganga Jal in water is equally purifying.
After bathing, devotees perform Pitru Tarpan and offer food or donations to the needy. It is said that charity on this day, especially after a bath, removes past sins and brings blessings of health, wealth, and happiness. Common donations include food, clothing, sesame seeds, and grains, which hold special spiritual importance on this Amavasya.
Auspicious Donations According to Zodiac Signs (Rashi Daan)
Hindu scriptures emphasize performing donations according to one’s zodiac sign (Rashi). Such donations enhance good fortune and help balance planetary influences.
Observing Margashirsha Amavasya Vrat helps attain peace, prosperity, and divine blessings. It also strengthens family harmony and removes ancestral curses (Pitru Dosh). Donating as per one’s zodiac brings specific benefits aligned with the planets governing each sign.
Devotees also chant Vishnu Sahasranama and offer lamps to ancestors in the evening, believing it brings light to their souls and ensures their blessings upon future generations.
Margashirsha Amavasya 2025, falling on November 20, is an auspicious opportunity to cleanse the soul through snan, daan, and japa. With Lord Krishna declaring this month divine, performing the right rituals and donations ensures spiritual upliftment and material prosperity.
