Jalakrida Ekadashi: Spiritual Significance

According to ancient scriptures, Jalakrida Ekadashi is a powerful day to seek forgiveness and spiritual upliftment. It is said that fasting and praying on this day brings virtue equal to several holy deeds, such as:

  • Bathing at Prayag during Magh Mela
  • Offering shraddha to ancestors in Gaya
  • Fasting on Maha Shivaratri
  • Bathing in Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse

Devotees also believe that observing this fast can lead to moksha (liberation) and a place in Vaikuntha, the divine abode of Lord Vishnu. Reciting the Jalakrida Ekadashi Katha is believed to earn merit equal to donating 100 cows.
Major Celebrations at Jagannath Temple, Puri
In Odisha, Jalakrida Ekadashi is observed with great devotion at the Jagannath Temple in Puri. One of the most sacred rituals of the day includes a symbolic water sport (Jalakrida) involving the deities:

The idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are taken to the Jala Kunda, a sacred water tank inside the temple.
Symbolic water play is performed, signifying divine joy and the purification of sins through the element of water.
This unique ritual reflects the playful and compassionate nature of Lord Vishnu and is a reminder of the healing and purifying energy of water.

Jalakrida Ekadashi: Rituals and Offerings

Devotees fast from sunrise to the next day and engage in bhajans, prayers, and Vishnu mantra chanting throughout the day. Key rituals include:

  • Special pujas and aratis held inside the temple
  • The deities are adorned in traditional attire
  • Offerings of satvik bhog (pure food) are made to the gods
  • The bhog is later distributed as prasad to devotees

Even though the main idols remain in the sanctum, the temple atmosphere is filled with devotion, music, and spiritual energy, celebrating Lord Vishnu’s divine water leelas.
