What is Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi?

According to the Amanta Hindu calendar, the Chaturthi tithi during Krishna Paksha of Vaishakha month is observed as Ekadanta Sankashti Chaturthi. In the Purnimanta calendar, this falls during the month of Jyeshtha. On this day, devotees worship Lord Ganesha in his fierce yet compassionate form — Ekadanta, which means “the one with a single tusk.”

The Legend of Ekadanta

The name Ekadanta has a profound backstory rooted in Hindu scriptures. It is said that when Lord Parashurama approached Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha stopped him from entering. In anger, Parashurama struck Ganesha with his axe, which led to the breaking of one of Ganesha's tusks. From then on, he came to be known as Ekadanta — the One-Tusked Lord.

Another tale from the Mudgala Purana, linked to the Ashtavinayaka traditions, tells us how Lord Ganesha assumed the form of Ekadanta to protect the gods from the evil demon Madasura. Overwhelmed by Lord Ekadanta’s power and presence, Madasura surrendered and retreated to Patala Loka, never to return.

How to Worship Lord Ganesha on Ekadanta Sankashti

Worship on this day is typically done after moonrise, which in 2025 is at 10:39 PM. Devotees observe a day-long fast, which is broken only after sighting the moon and performing Ganesh Puja.

Here’s how you can worship Lord Ekadanta:

  • Begin the day with a clean bath and a vow to fast.
  • Chant Ganapati Atharvashirsha and other Ganesha mantras.
  • Prepare traditional offerings like modaks, durva grass, and red flowers.
  • After moonrise, offer your prayers to Lord Ganesha, reciting his Ekadanta stotra or names.
  • End the fast after puja and moon sighting.
Spiritual Significance

Sankashti Chaturthi, especially in the Ekadanta form, is believed to remove major obstacles and grant wisdom, inner strength, and peace. Devotees pray to Lord Ganesha to eliminate hardships and bring success in their lives.

In conclusion, Ekadanta Sankashti 2025 is a spiritually powerful occasion to seek the blessings of the one-tusked Lord Ganesha. By observing the fast with faith and devotion, and performing the evening puja with sincerity, one can invoke divine protection and prosperity.
