'Peacemaker and unifier': President Donald Trump on the legacy he wants to leave behind

"We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into," US President Donald Trump said in his inaugural address.

Promising what he termed as the onset of the "golden age" of the United States of America, President Donald Trump said that his proudest legacy that he would like to leave behind would be that of a "peacemaker and unifier".

"I'm pleased to say that, as of yesterday, one day before I assumed office, the hostages in the Middle East are coming back home to their families," Trump said in his inaugural address as the 47th US President.

President Trump further said that under his watch, US will build the "strongest military the world has ever seen".

"We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into," President Trump said in his speech that was laden with digs at the erstwhile Biden administration and claimed that "the decline of America" had ended.

"Our power will stop all wars and bring a new spirit of unity to a world that has been angry, violent, and totally unpredictable," he added.

In his inaugural speech, President Trump presented his return as a rejection of the "radical and corrupt administration" that he claimed defined the presidency of his predecessor Joe Biden.

"My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal and all of these many betrayals that have taken place, and to give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy, and indeed their freedom,” Trump says. “From this moment on, America’s decline is over," he said.

Trump also announced a slew of radical measures that he claimed would be rolled out through executive orders. This includes a "national emergency" on the southern border to push back against illegal immigration, unilaterally renaming the Gulf of Mexico as "gulf of America" and "taking back the Panama Canal".
