Charlie Kirk assassination: FBI releases photos of a person of interest, appeals for tips

The Federal Bureau of Invesigation (FBI) released photos of a person of interest in connection with the assassination of Charlie Kirk and appealed to the public for tips.

"We are asking for the public's help identifying this person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. 1-800-CALL-FBI," the federal agency posted on X.

Earlier, authorities said that they recovered a high-power rifle in connection to the case and also acquired video footage.

Additionally, US President Donald Trump announced that he will posthumously award country's highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Kirk

"I'm pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom," Trump said during a ceremony at the Pentagon marking the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The shooting occurred during an outdoor event attended by roughly 3,000 people. Kirk, 31, was responding to a question about gun violence when a single gunshot rang out. Cellphone video shows Kirk clutching his neck and collapsing, as blood poured from the wound and the crowd scattered in panic.

Officials believe the shot was fired from a rooftop sniper’s position on campus. The shooter remains at large.
