“Stresslaxing describes the experience of people who are already stressed trying to force themselves to relax, which only heightens their anxiety,” Healthline writes quoting Dr. Michael Schirripa, a psychiatrist and author. This paradoxical response can make the simple act of taking a break feel daunting and unproductive.
The Mechanics of Stresslaxing
The clinical term for stresslaxing is relaxation-induced anxiety. According to Deborah Serani, Psy.D., professor at Adelphi University, "Those prone to generalized anxiety or overthinking are especially susceptible. The irony is that their attempts to relax can lead to panic attacks and depressive symptoms."
The brain’s inherent resistance to forced relaxation is a key factor. Brains are designed to be vigilant, always on the lookout for potential dangers. This evolutionary trait can make it challenging for individuals to truly switch off and relax.
Pressures From All Sides
External pressures such as work demands, family responsibilities, and societal expectations can leave people feeling constantly on alert. "The perceived obligation to meet these demands can prevent individuals from carving out personal downtime," Schirripa notes.
This constant state of readiness blurs the lines between work and leisure, a phenomenon sociologist Dalton Conley calls "weisure."
Internally, the drive to stay busy and the fear of confronting one's thoughts and feelings can also impede relaxation. "Some worry that relaxing will lead to boredom or force them to face unpleasant memories," says Serani.
The Cost of Failing to Relax
Failing to relax can have severe long-term consequences, including high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, fatigue, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
"Chronic stress can reset the nervous system to an overly stimulated state, making relaxation even more difficult," warns Natalie Christine Dattilo, PhD, a clinical psychologist and Harvard Medical School instructor.
To counteract stresslaxing, experts recommend several practical strategies that include establishing boundaries between work and leisure, practice meditation, celebrate accomplishments, among other breathing and sensory techniques.
By incorporating these practices, individuals can better manage stress and avoid the pitfalls of stresslaxing, ultimately leading to a more balanced and healthier lifestyle.
