Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, travelled to Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh to be present at the wedding of a member of his staff. He visited the employee’s village for the ceremony, wore a traditional kurta for the occasion, and joined the family and other guests for local food as well. Photographs from the event showed him alongside the bride and groom, their relatives, and others who had gathered for the celebration.
After the function, Wong posted images from the visit on his social media account, giving an insight into the atmosphere in the village and his interactions with those present. His message on X, formerly known as Twitter, read: “Attended the #wedding ceremony of my staff in his village at Bulandshahr, UP. So much joy. Congratulations. HC Wong.”
The images included him greeting the couple on stage, taking pictures with extended family members, and eating a plate of regional dishes served at the event.

The post drew considerable attention, with many users responding positively to his decision to take part in a personal milestone of a junior colleague. One person wrote: “The kind of people-first diplomacy the world truly needs.” Another comment stated: “That’s really kind of you, Excellency. It’s rare these days to see people in high positions take the time to celebrate with their local staff. Most only attend events hosted by the rich and well-connected.”
Other messages echoed similar sentiments. A user said: “This is actually kinda cute.” Another person remarked: “Almost no one there in the pics would have any idea of the power you wield or how important Singapore–India relations are. This nice gesture of yours is truly heartwarming and something the people in the pics would be telling their grandchildren about.”
Someone else observed: “This is so wholesome, this is what People First diplomacy looks like.” Another added: “This shall be a lifetime memory for the family and shows your humility and kind heart.”
A separate response noted: “This speaks volume about your down to earth upbringing. Beautiful gesture on your part. Kudos to you & your wonderful country, Singapore.” One more person commented: “Very nice gesture. It's rare for foreign officers like you to take part in our celebrate common people occasions.”
