It has been five years to the devastating Pulwama terror attack that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel on duty. On this day in 2019, a suicide bomber targeted a convoy of 78 vehicles carrying over 2,500 soldiers on the Jammu Srinagar National Highway.
40 jawans were killed and over 35 were injured in what was one of the most gruesome terror attacks in history. The attack shook the nation’s core in its entirety and serves as a reminder of the supreme sacrifice made by our soldiers.
Terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) claimed responsibility of the attack. Twelve days later, in the late hours of February 26, Indian Air Force jets bombed JeM’s camp in Balakot located in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
On February 14, several dignitaries and social media users took to X to pay tribute to the brave martyrs. “I pay homage to the brave heroes who were martyred in Pulwama. Their service and sacrifice for our nation will always be remembered,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote.
Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi shared a picture of himself at the Pulwama attack site and wrote in Hindi. “Hundreds of salutes and humble tribute to the brave martyrs of Pulwama terrorist attack. The country will always be indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice dedicated to the defense of India,” read the caption loosely translated in English.
