A former Google employee from New York exposed a startling flaw in the hiring process of top companies when he sent out his resume deliberately filled with absurd and bizarre qualifications and yet got 29 job interviews in over a month.

Jerry Lee, a former Strategy and Operations Manager at Google, with his experiment was testing whether the prestige of his former employer would overshadow glaring red flags on his resume. Shockingly, it did.

Lee's resume included outlandish claims like being an "expert in Mia Khalifa" and holding a fraternity record for "most vodka shots in one night” and “spread herpes STD to 60% of intern team”.

Despite these eyebrow-raising additions, the recruiters remained largely unfazed. Over a period of just six weeks, Lee received 29 interview invitations from notable companies, including Reddit, MongoDB and Robinhood.

This stunt was part of Lee's experiment to see if recruiters would scrutinise the details on his resume or merely be impressed by the name "Google." The results highlighted how superficial the hiring process can sometimes be, where prestigious affiliations often carry more weight than the content or accuracy of one’s resume.

Lee documented the findings of his experiment in an Instagram video that quickly went viral, sparking online debates about recruitment practices. His post, titled “I Landed 29 Interviews With The Name 'Kiss My Nuts,’” gained widespread attention for the way it showcased the leniency in resume screening.

“What did we learn from this experiment?” Lee asked his followers. He went on to summarise three key points from his experiment:

1. Focus on strong bullet points and measurable achievements rather than worrying about minor details like periods or font sizes.

2. Big names on your resume matter, but quantifiable results are just as important if you haven’t worked for a top company.
3. Keep your resume simple and structured to help recruiters find key information quickly.

Lee’s experiment concluded with his now viral video on Day 42 where he showed the list of companies that have invited him for interviews. He has 1.2 million followers on Instagram and is the co-founder of a job consulting agency. He has been on the Forbes 30 under 30 list as well.

“To be fair Reddit sounds about right,” one user joked. “Shame on the recruitment process!” wrote another.
