Shopping in Search now feels like talking to a friend Google has upgraded AI Mode in Search so you can describe what you want in plain language without worrying about filters or keywords. Ask for “cozy autumn sweaters” or “moisturizers for oily skin” and you’ll get neatly organised results with images, prices, reviews and even stock details so you can decide quickly.

Google’s AI arm, DeepMind, is taking a serious look at what the world might look like once machines become smarter than humans. The company is hiring a Senior AI Economist to study how Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) could reshape the global economy.

According to DeepMind’s job listing, the role is meant for someone who can research the “post-AGI economy” — a future where AI is capable of performing any intellectual task that humans can, and potentially more. The economist will explore how such advancements could transform fundamental ideas like scarcity, power, and the distribution of resources.

“As a Senior AI Economist at Google DeepMind, you will be at the forefront of understanding the profound economic transformations that will accompany the arrival of AGI and ASI,” the description reads. The position involves leading new research in post-AGI economics, building simulations and models, and rethinking long-held economic assumptions about wealth and labor.

Founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014, DeepMind is known for its groundbreaking work in artificial intelligence — from the AlphaGo program that defeated world champions at Go, to AlphaFold, which revolutionized protein research. In recent years, the company has increasingly turned its attention to AI safety, governance, and ethics, aiming to better understand how AI will affect society at large.

Under the leadership of Demis Hassabis, a renowned AI researcher and Nobel laureate in Chemistry, DeepMind’s latest move shows that it’s not just focusing on technology, but also on its long-term social and economic consequences.

The job posting also suggests that the selected candidate will collaborate with other researchers across disciplines, engage with global experts, and communicate findings both internally and publicly through publications and presentations.

Interestingly, Google isn’t the only tech company venturing into this territory. Anthropic, the maker of Claude AI, has also announced plans to hire an “Economics & Policy Lead” to study how AI impacts labor markets and global growth — signaling a growing industry trend to prepare for a post-AGI world.
