Apple stops signing iOS 26.2 Beta 1 for iPhone Air and iPad Pro: Here’s why

Apple has stopped signing the iOS 26.2 Beta 1 update for the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and iPad Pro (M5) after reports of glitches linked to new modem chips. The move prevents users from installing or rolling back to the buggy beta version as Apple works on a fix.

Apple has quietly stopped signing the first beta version of iOS 26.2 for a few of its latest devices, including the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and the cellular models of the iPad Pro (M5). If that sounds technical, here’s what it really means — and why Apple might have done it.

When Apple “signs” an update, it’s basically giving that software version an official green light to be installed on supported devices. Once the signing stops, users can no longer install that version — whether they’re trying to upgrade to it or roll back from a newer one.

So, what’s behind this sudden move? Apple hasn’t made an official statement, but reports suggest the issue is linked to the devices’ new “C1” and “C1X” modem chips, which handle cellular connectivity. It’s possible that the beta software caused unexpected bugs or compatibility issues with these chips, which could affect performance or stability.

Some developers have already reported trouble. One well-known Apple analyst shared that after installing the iPadOS 26.2 Beta 1 on his new iPad Pro, the device crashed and went into recovery mode — forcing him to restore it to iPadOS 26.1 to get it working again. That kind of glitch is exactly what Apple wants to prevent from spreading, especially on test software still in development.

By pulling the beta for these models, Apple is playing it safe. It’s likely that the company found the issue during its internal testing or after receiving feedback from early developers. The tech giant will probably re-release a fixed version once engineers iron out the modem-related problems.

If you’re not part of Apple’s developer or public beta program, you don’t need to worry — regular users on stable releases aren’t affected. But for those who are testing beta software, the update simply won’t appear or will fail to install.

In short, Apple has paused access to a buggy beta to protect users of its newest devices. The move highlights Apple’s cautious approach to software testing, even if it means slowing down the rollout of the latest iOS features temporarily.
