A consensus emerged on the name of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to be appointed as the chairperson of the opposition bloc INDIA on January 13. Leaders of the bloc met virtually and discussed various aspects of the alliance and the preparations for the Lok Sabha elections, due in April-May.
Here are some reactions to Kharge's possible appointment:
NCP Chief Sharad Pawar
"A meeting of INDIA Alliance was held under the chairmanship of Mallikarjun Kharge. We had a discussion that we all will take a decision on seat sharing as soon as possible. It was suggested by some that the alliance should be headed by Mallikarjun Kharge and everyone agreed."
"We also formed a committee to make plans in the coming days. Everyone suggested that Nitish Kumar should take responsibility as the convenor, but his opinion is that the one who is already in charge should continue."
CPI General Secretary D Raja
"It was a good meeting. Out of 12 parties, 10 attended the meeting... Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav could not attend the meeting. Seat sharing was discussed. It has been directed to all the constituents of the INDIA alliance to take up the seat-sharing negotiations and to conclude them as early as possible. Tamil Nadu CM informed that after Pongal, that will be done in Tamil Nadu."
"There was a discussion on Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. There was a discussion on the question of chairperson and convener. Kharge's name was proposed as chairperson. It was agreed upon."

"This was bound to happen, I believe an SIT should be established to investigate who rejected the proposal and who took the decision," senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
JD (U) leader Sanjay Kumar Jha said that Kumar wanted the convener to be from the Congress.
